The Courage to Start: Building a Creative Business One Imperfect Step at a Time

In June 2015, a quote led to a story.

That story led to a series.

That series eventually grew into a multi-faceted creative business.

It’s been really hard. There have been many moments when I questioned my sanity. It would have been easier to wait until my kids were in school full-time. It would have been easier to launch products when I had more time, or when I actually knew how to launch a book, build a brand, or run a business.

But, I couldn’t shake the vision.

The idea kept pulling at me. So instead of waiting for the perfect time, I started taking small, imperfect steps.

Slowly, over the years, the vision began to unfold.

If I had waited until my kids were in school full-time, I would just now be getting into The Little Shot: Courage, book 1.

Instead, by April 2026, all seven books in the series will be published, and I’ll be hosting a Little Shot Party (free registration here) to celebrate.

Along the way, this one idea has grown into:

  • 7 books (with a spin-off chapter book in the works)
  • Two podcasts
  • A writing workshop
  • A keynote talk
  • Workshops for kids and adults
  • This blog (I’m not a professional blogger, but it’s something)
  • Social media content
  • Merchandise

This isn’t a list of bragging rights.

It’s proof of what happens when you start before you feel ready.

You probably have something you’ve been wanting to do: start a business, write a book, launch a podcast, create something meaningful.

Maybe you’re waiting.

Waiting until you have more time.

Waiting until you have more money.

Waiting until you understand all the details.

Waiting until everything is perfect before putting it out into the world.

From personal experience, I can tell you: don’t wait.

Launch the imperfect product.

Take the small step.

Have the courage to feel a little embarrassed sometimes.

Test things.

See what works, and keep doing those things.

See what doesn’t, and learn from it.

If you want to see someone who has publicly figured things out while doing it wrong (or not very well), you’re welcome to scroll through some of my older social media posts.

They’re proof that growth requires imperfect beginnings.

Here’s another thing I’ve learned about entrepreneurship and creative work:

People who are successful will cheer you on.

People who see you imperfectly taking action will usually do one of three things:

  • Encourage you
  • Offer tips to help you improve
  • Tease you

For the people who tease you, your response can be simple, “Then you go do it.”

Have the courage to start now.

I’m cheering you on.

I want to see you grow into who you were meant to become.

Because success isn’t always about the tangible results.

Often, it’s about the becoming.

Become who you were meant to be.
